Purchasing Garlic-Check the origin

topic posted Fri, December 9, 2005 - 5:32 PM by  Don
Just thought I would let people here now a fact I found out not too long ago. Big chain grocery stores have begun sourcing "fresh" garlic from China. This trend has been happening with many products, but now it has even touched the produce industry. I have found that the quality is not as good as the traditional California grown product. After reading some news articles it appears that some of the garlic companies in Gilroy (the home of the California garlic industry) are either closing their doors or selling off their fields and importing Garlic from China themselves for resale.
Hmmm....makes you wonder...in a few years just how many things we use on a regular basis will be imported from China or some new cheap labor source.
Such is the way of business I suppose, but hopefully the people will make their voice heard by not buying the imported stuff. Eventually I hope that stores will be forced to label the product as imported so the public knows what they are buying.

      <sacasm mode on>

      Why not? We get cheap (for them) truffles from there. They also provide a fair amount of the fungi you see in the stores. Soon, all of our produce will be from China and Argentina, our meat Canada, our canned goods Mexico, and we'll pay for it all with our paychecks we got from our Japanese-owned comgomerate company. Unless we happen to be farmers, in which case we'll get our unemployment check from the government.
      <sarcasm mode off?

      Buy local until you can't anymore.

        Excellent post Linda. The world is changing rapidly around us,...and most of us are unaware of how dramatically our supply chaing has been "outsourced".

        I even went to a produce stand near my work. The signs said local produce. The area I live has a lot of local produce and a lot of organic growers. So,....I thought this might be a good stop. The only garlic they had was in these little red mesh bags of about 7 heads. I bought one,..wondering why it was so perfectly white. Totally white in color. Once I got home I noticed the small gold sticker stuck to the bottom of the bad. Made in China. You really have to be careful it seems. From now on I will only buy garlic at the Davis Food Co-op that only sells local organic produce, and at local weekend farmers markets.
        It is really amazing to me that this new garlic source seemed to have popped up overnight, and now it is hard to find local garlic at the big grocery stores. And as consumers no-one knows,....too bad they are not required to post the origin,..like they are doing with seafood here in California.
