...is a restaurant in San Francisco that is pretty much wholly dedicated to garlic. Last night, my husband and I visited for the first time in a long time, this time taking along our brother and sis-in-law for their first visit.
We started with bagna calda - a little pan of about 40 roasted garlic cloves in oil served with perfectly crusty bread...
Next, a simple salad generously dressed with garlic vinaigrette...
Gnocchetti in garlic gorgonzola cream with fresh asparagus...
Main dishes:
(2) carmelized thick-cut pork chops
prime rib topped with roasted garlic cloves
"Silence of the Lamb" shank w/fava beans and Chianti sauce
~ all served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes
Needless to say, it was a garlic extravaganza! I definitely wouldn't say it's the finest dining experience in the city, or even North Beach. But if you ever find yourself in San Francisco with the need for a serious garlic fix, head over to Columbus Street and The Stinking Rose and scratch that itch.

Re: The Stinking Rose
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 7:42 AMHey.... coming down there in two weeks... I've been to The Stinking Rose before and really liked it... do you have any more suggestions for the area? With all the Italian joints in the neighborhood, the garlics got to be flowing... :) -

Re: The Stinking Rose
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 11:40 AMSF is so rich in restaurants, I think one could eat at a different place every day, three meals a day, for years without ever hitting the same place twice. It's just amazing (and mind boggling, if you don't know what you want and are trying to decide by looking in the phone book!).
One of my favorite SF joints is a Greek place called Kokkari. Pricey but worth the splurge.

My hubby and I have recently discovered Alamo Square Seafood Grill. Great atmosphere and very reasonable prices. Bonus is that it's just one block down from the oft-photographed "Painted Ladies" (row of brightly colored Victorians with the city skyline in the background).

Great little Spanish place on Lombard called Alegrias (real hole-in-the-wall kinda place). Excellent tapas and very friendly staff - they treat everyone like family. : )
Fuku-Sushi in the Japantown Center has always been good to us, although I see now that it's received some mixed reviews.
Best crab cocktail on the planet? Sabella & LaTorre on Taylor in Fisherman's Wharf.

I really could go on all day... ; )
