Anyone ever go to the garlic festival?

Has anyone here ever been to the annual garlic festival in Gilroy? If so, how is it? Is the food good? Any other events that happen there of interest? And is it worth going to?

thanks

I went a few years ago. Wasn't terribly impressed. I'd characterize it as "Garlic for amateurs."

I went a few years back after dreaming about it for a long time....;o)

      1) It was very crowded

      2) I got my picture taken with the man dressed up like a giant clove

      3) I had some garlic ice cream

I think that when it first started and was less commercial it was probably better

I went years ago... maybe 15 years ago. It was crowded then too. The food was ok but like any of the food at a festival it was made in large quantities so not as good had you gone to the propriotor's restaurant. And again like any festival or fair it was overpriced and generally skimpy on the portions.

though it's been a long time, I don't recall many attractions other than being a food festival. There was a stage with some local bands, a couple of community and environmental type booths, a few clothing booths mostly with stuff like shirts and hats and such that said Gilroy or whatever on them, and I think there was one or two of those booths where you could win a car or a trip if you filled out the form (and changed your phone service or wound up on a gazillion mailing lists or whatever gimick they were getting over on you). I don't remember there being much of anything geared toward kids either.

My friends met at the Los Angeles Garlic Festival years ago and later got married when she was proposed to with "WILL YOU MARRY ME" in garlic bulbs up in Gilroy. They love going to alot of different food festivals, www.beachcalifornia.com/califo...rs.html and the Garlic Fest one is one of their favorites. For years, every anniversary they would go up to the Gilroy Garlic Festival and bring a group of friends to join them. I went a few years back and had a very good time.

The trick is to get there the first day - Friday and show up just before it opens so your in there early enough without crowds. Enjoyed some champagne cocktails outside before the event. The favored food was in the Gourmet Alley area. That section had alot of cooked spicy shrimp & other meats.

It was hot that July when I went, so be sure to drink alot of water too.

I went last year & thought it was pretty cool. It was hot & dusty & crowded but I loved it.

The first time i went I was a kid. I loved it probably because I did not have to pay for it. I went a couple of years ago.for the second time. it was crowded with overpriced, undersized food portions. i bought the garlicky gumbo which was more like a shot of gumbow than a bowl. I could have gotten better for cheaper elsewhere. I think there are better options for your garlic fix.
